"Max" - Victim of attack by another dog

Max

When Mr Hall took his dog Max for a walk last Saturday, not far from Aston Flamville, he was unexpectedly attacked by a large German Shepherd dog.

Poor Max was significantly outmatched for sheer size and strength. Picked up and shaken around like a ragdoll Mr Hall feared for his pet's
life.
It is hard to imagine how both he and Max must have felt when both witnessing and being the victim in this highly distressing incident.

Once Mr Hall was able to rescue Max from this terrible situation he picked him up in his arms and brought him straight down to the surgery.

Not surprisingly both Max and his owner were quite badly shocked. Max had large mutiple wounds over his back where he had been bitten. He was extremely tender and squealed in pain at the slightest touch.

He was very quickly admitted to the surgical unit and given very powerful analgesics to relieve the pain. Whilst under heavy sedation we were able to clip, clean and debride his wounds.

Due to the heavy contamination of the wound and the likely accummulation of serous exudate a double exit penrose drain made from latex rubber was inserted. This facilitates the removal of excessive fluid around the damaged soft tissues and allows healing to take place more quickly.

With heavy doses of antibiotics and analgesics the prognosis for Max making a physical recovery is excellent. The pyschological scars may take somewhat longer to heal for both victim and owner.

A return to well established routine, long term positive encouragement and time is what is needed for a more complete recovery although I am very sure that Max and his owner will succeed in that together.
