Donations!

Last week I did something for the very first time and I'm ashamed to admit that it has taken me so long. It gave me a great deal of pleasure and sense of satisfaction........once it was over, and I fully intend to repeat the experience.

Something that did surprise me was that there were so many other like minded individuals willing to participate so late in the evening. What have I been up to?.........I gave blood!

Probably one of the last members of staff at Fairfield to volunteer their services in this manner. Even Asterix my cat has given more blood donations over the years than I have!

Interestingly, in my capacity as a veterinary surgeon when I have observed that many owners are in fact like their pets I was amazed to discover that I am blood type A...........just like Asterix my cat!

I was also intrigued to discover that the very first blood transfusion ever carried out was between 2 dogs, a spaniel and a mastiff way back in 1666. This experiment effectively pioneered the concept of blood transfusion which is used so extensively throughout our health service.

The national blood service is dependant entirely on voluntary donations and is something of which the UK and its volunteers can be extremely proud. So in this season of goodwill or if you wish to make a New Year resolution which might just save someone's life then go to www.blood.co.uk or call 0845 7 711 711 It just might be the best present you've ever given!
