In May 2000 I applied for and got the job of receptionist at Fairfield Veterinary Centre. Now here I am in September 2004 as Practice manager. However I'm still to be found on reception during evening surgery and on some Saturdays.

Fairfield isn't my first experience of veterinary practice. Way back in 1966 when I left school, I worked for the veterinary surgeon in my hometown of Wisbech. I enrolled as a trainee animal nursing auxiliary, a scheme, which at that time was in its infancy. The Royal college of nursing would not give permission, at that time, for the word nurse to be used.

I worked and studied for 2 years spending time to gain experience at the Veterinary School and the Veterinary Investigation Centre in Cambridge as well as the pathology and radiography departments of the "human" hospital in Wisbech.

I qualified as a registered animal-nursing auxiliary in 1968; my registration number with the Royal College was 230! (Not many of us about in those days!) This was the qualification that has evolved into to-day's Veterinary Nurse and it's more than the title has evolved. The Veterinary Nurses that I work alongside at Fairfield to-day are expected to be far more skilled and competent than we auxiliaries were.

Over the past 35 years, I have, between raising my children, worked as holiday relief nurse/receptionist for practices at Dereham in Norfolk and Ely in Cambridgeshire. The latter being some 18 years ago. Each time I've returned to veterinary work, I've noticed great changes and advancements in the veterinary profession, but none so great as when I came to Fairfield. The standard of client and patient care together with the vet's expertise exceed by far any I have encountered over the years.

I very much enjoy my work and hope to continue being part of the Fairfield team until it's time for me to be put out to grass! When that time comes I intend to spend more time pursuing my interests of: painting with watercolours, needlepoint, reading, gardening, seeing more of this planet and spending more time with my 3 grandchildren........ and quaffing the occasional bottle of white wine!
